Producer and lead talent in three national hit shows, Billy McGuigan developed the live request format for Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience, complete with the requirement that all the band members memorize and be able to play on a second’s notice all 200+ songs in the Beatles anthology. And that’s how the show works – never ever the same – but always an audience grand slam. Folks fill out request cards pre-show in the lobby. Along with the tune’s title, they say why it’s a special song to them. During the show, the brothers pull cards out of a hat – and chat with the audience about the reason for their request. Then, note for note, chord for chord, the song is performed perfectly as originally recorded by the Beatles. No wigs. No faked accents. No pretense. No phoning it in. Just remarkable, sincere and artful mastery. Tickets $23 or $17 each with the advance purchase of 10 or more. Resident artist Kendrix Singletary directs the theater’s return to dramatic community theater productions. Steel Magnolias is a comedy–drama play about the bond among a group of Southern women in northwest Louisiana. Written by Robert Harling, and based on his experience with his sister's death, the title suggests the "female characters are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.” The magnolia specifically references a magnolia tree they are arguing about at the beginning. A first play which met with immediate critical and popular acceptance in its premier production by New York's WPA Theatre. Concerned with a group of gossipy southern ladies in a small-town beauty parlor, the play is alternately hilarious and touching—and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of its characters. Up on the Roof.  Under the Boardwalk.  This Magic Moment. There Goes My Baby.  Dance with Me.  Spanish Harlem.  Stand by Me.  The list of hits goes on and on. THE DRIFTERS…one of Rock & Roll’s founding vocal groups is once again touring the U.S. under the auspices of their original management team. From their inception in the early 1950's and up until recently, THE DRIFTERS has a symbiotic relationship with Rock & Roll legend George Treadwell, who has discovered and managed such famous artists as Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn and Nina Simone.  The Treadwell Family was there when the original DRIFTERS formed and was responsible for guiding their career through 20 years of uninterrupted hits that has made them the second most successful recording artist of all time, according to Billboard Magazine. The Drifters were originally formed in the 1950's (60 years ago).  From the start, the term "Drifters" was used to denote performers who "drifted" in and out of the group.  All of the original members are long deceased and, in fact, the last original member departed the group over 40 years ago.  Robert Wiggins, our longest current member, has been with the group 30 years and worked…

From Bop to Pop…Evolution of a Sound The Doo Wop Project begins at the beginning, tracing the evolution of Doo Wop from the classic sound of five guys singing tight harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today. “Tosca” In conjunction with Rising Alternative Films, this series includes recent live productions of iconic operas at the world’s great concert halls.  Screenings are at 7pm. Tickets $10/Students $5. A singer in love, passionate, jealous and impulsive; a romantic painter, an idealist and a defender of liberty; a police chief with a lust for flesh, power and blood, ready to do anything to achieve his ends. Puccini artfully combines the ingredients of a melodrama written for Sarah Bernhardt and comes up with what might be called the opera of operas, a spectacle at once primitive and decadent. In a mythical yet real Rome, from the shadows of the church of Sant’ Andrea della Valle to the terrace of Castello Sant’ Angelo, passions collide and tear all apart, mingling the erotic with the sacred, love with possession, theatre with life. Nothing is what it seems in Tosca: beautiful women who come to pray are conspirators, defeats are victories and mock executions are real.  A spectacular work which captures the essence of opera as few others do. At times Gould is calmly sweet and perceptive, at others he’s a pathological liar and an obnoxious drunk, and he frequently experiences sudden outbursts of rage. Earning occasional financial support from poet E. E. Cummings, portrait painter Alice Neel, Village Vanguardfounder Max Gordon, and art gallery owner Vivian Marquie, among others, Gould is able to secure a nightly room in flophouses until an anonymous benefactor arranges accommodations in a residential hotel for him. “Madama Butterfly” In conjunction with Rising Alternative Films, this series includes recent live productions of iconic operas at the world’s great concert halls.  Screenings are at 7pm. Tickets $10/Students $5. The libretto of Madama Butterfly is one of those rare instances in operatic history where the text is actually an improvement over its sources. The dimensions of the opera, the finely etched depictions of its characters, its inexorable progress to its dénouement, and the beautiful verses and dialogue constructed by Giuseppe Giacosa all stand in marked contrast to the writings discussed above. Coupled with Puccini’s emotionally charged musical score, Madama Butterfly produces an effect at once intimate and overwhelming, a haunting portrayal of the dangers of misguided love. Built in Southern Italy in early seventh century BC, Teatro Antico di Taormina is the second largest ancient Greek theatre in Italy. Frequently used for operatic and theatrical performances, this picturesque theater sitting on the coast of Sicily is home to the annual Festival Euro Mediterraneo. When the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, they are in dire need of funds for the burials. Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater, 315 North Chestnut Street
Lumberton, NC 28358 United States

Celebrating their fortieth anniversary this year, Riders In The Sky have been keepers of the flame passed on by the Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, reviving and revitalizing the genre. And while remaining true to the integrity of Western music, they have themselves become modern-day icons by branding the genre with their own legendary wacky humor and way-out Western wit, and all along encouraging buckaroos and buckarettes to live life “The Cowboy Way!” No less important than their two Grammy wins, Riders have been the Western Music Association’s “Entertainers Of the Year” six times, and won “Traditional Group of the Year” and “Traditional Album of the Year” multiple times. The Academy of Western Artists has named them “Western Music Group of the Year” twice in 5 years, and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum has bestowed Riders with their Wrangler Award statuette three times. It comes as no surprise then that Billboard magazine’s Jim Bessman counts them as one of “the most significant acts in the history of American music.”   Ticketing Information Tickets for the Mainstage Series can be purchased on-line by going to our web site at www.carolinaciviccenter.com.  Tickets also can be purchased…

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.  The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. One of Sondheim's most popular works, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated show with the opportunity to feature actors adept at dark comedy. Designers will especially enjoy highlighting the fantastical elements of this magical word.
