9/22 - 10/31 FABRICation
FABRICation celebrates the work of seven artists that incorporate a textile sensibility through elements of fabric and fabrication. Inspired by a rich array of historical textiles, these complex multi-part constructions are encoded by traditional handicraft to contrast our culture’s rampant media consumption with the redemptive nuance of slow work wrought by hand. Saturated with vibrant color, the luminous materiality activates the senses and counters passive visual skimming. Works range from delicate illusions to layered constructions to architectural interventions. Mixed media includes oil and acrylic paint, vintage clothing, aluminum screens, wool, silk, plastic, thread, vinyl, burlap, rug-hold, glass, recycled objects, and found fabrics. Whether painting, tapestry or construct, these works interweave sensory pleasure with repetitive process to invoke introspection and reflection. Featured artists include Erin Castellan, Kristy Deetz, Virginia Derryberry, Reni Gower, Rachel Hayes, Susan Iverson and Natalie Smith. Reception: Monday, October 6, 3:00-4:30pm. Gallery Talk by Virginia Derryberry: Monday, October 6, 3:30pm. Free and open to the public. Gallery hours are M-Th 9-5, F 9-3, and Wed. evenings 5-8. Closed when classes are not in session. For more information call Dr. Nancy R. Palm 775.4264 or Dr. Richard Gay 775.4045.

Glamorous, sexy and deliciously wicked, Jekyll & Hyde is the enthralling musical based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story about a brilliant but obsessive scientist whose alter ego wreaks havoc across Victorian London. An evocative tale of two men – one a doctor, passionate and romantic - the other, a terrifying madman; and two women - one, beautiful and trusting - the other, beautiful and trusting only herself. Both in love with the same man and both unaware of his dark secret. Featuring a thrilling pop rock score including the unforgettable hit, "This Is The Moment" from multi Grammy and Tony nominated Frank Wildhorn & double Oscar and Grammy winning Leslie Bricusse, Jekyll & Hyde has mesmerized audiences the world over. "Lush, appealing and genuinely moving" proclaims The Daily News, Jekyll & Hyde is back. Don't miss it! Tickets: $41/$36/$21 / $16 child or student $5 UNCP Student / $16 Faculty or Staff/ $31 Alumni. 10/24 A Symphony of Horror! Mallarmé Chamber Players Accompany Nosferatu Silent F
Durham’s Mallarmé Chamber Players bring their extensive musical skills to enliven one of the first vampire films. Nosferatu: eine Symphonie des Grauens (translated as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror) is the classic 1922 German Expressionist silent horror film, directed by F.W. Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok. Composer Eric Schwartz’s original music for Nosferatu is a juxtaposition of a variety of elements: not simply “audio wallpaper”, Schwartz’s score is living, breathing, and occasionally screaming commentary on the action on screen, the silent film tradition, and the entire horror genre. Mallarmé Chamber Players is a flexible ensemble of professional musicians based in Durham, NC, whose mission is to enrich the lives of their community through outstanding chamber music. The ensemble distinguishes itself by its innovative educational programs, its commitment to creative collaboration with other organizations, its creation of significant new work, and its dedication to serve a diverse population. 1/15 - 2/26 ART EXHIBITS: Particulates of Light ~ Artwork of Jim Hurst
Opening Reception 5:30-7pm on January 15th. When an artist applies paint to canvas, they are in effect painting light. As light is made of particles of energy, spray paint is made of particulates of pigment. I came across this spray paint art form only a few years ago and explored its potential to create art, and I found spray paint can emulate light that leaves the piece with a pleasing glow, drawing the viewer like a moth toward the light placed on canvas.
