4/22 - 6/10 ART EXHIBIT - Re-Riding History: Ledger Art from the Southern Plains to M
UNC Pembroke’s A.D. Gallery presents an invitational exhibit referencing the Native American relocation to Fort Marion from 1875-78. It features a range of works by 72 artists representing the 72 Indians forcibly removed from their ancestral lands near Salt Fork, Okla. Those individuals, many of whom were tribal leaders, were taken to Fort Marion in St. Augustine, Fla., where they participated in the creation of ledger art. It is from this style of Native art that these contemporary artists draw inspiration. Curated by Emily Arthur, Marwin Begaye, and John Hitchcock, the exhibit is free and open to the public and runs from April 22 through June 10 in UNCP’s A.D. Gallery. 4/28 - 6/15 "Woodland Spirits" by Lumbee artist Terry White
“White’s work has never been shown in our museum,” said curator Dr. Stan Knick. “We believe visitors will be delighted by this new group of innovative and creative mixed-media works.” In a statement about the show White said: “Art, for me, provides three things in life – therapy, self-expression and cultural awakening. When working on a carving or sculpture, it frees my mind... it teaches me patience. Being able to express myself is a way to show how I view things... I can create what I dream or sometimes even what I think I have seen. I feel that we can awaken our instincts and bring out things from the past through art – images and stories from our Eastern Woodland culture.” "Woodland Spirits" will open on Tuesday, April 28, and will be on display through mid-June 2015. A reception for theshow will be held on Tuesday, April 28, at 7 p.m. in the Museum of the Southeast American Indian (in Old Main) on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. For more information contact the Museum at (910-521) 6282 or e-mail becky.goins@uncp.edu.
